What is it? Why is it harmful? Many health institutions and independent inspection bodies agree upon the fact that paraben, paraffin and SLS / SLES, which we frequently encounter in almost all personal care products, directly or indirectly cause harm to our body. When choosing our cosmetics and personal care substances, we should definitely make sure about their contents. We use the products that are produced for hygiene and care, but have a high carcinogenic effect due to the heavy chemicals in their contents, almost every day, and unfortunately we do not know how we are damaged. Let’s take a look at the effects of paraben, paraffin, formaldehyde, Propylene Glycol and SLS/ SLES that we encounter most;

Paraben: It is used as a preservative and shelf life extender in cosmetics and personal care products. It is a toxic substance. It causes skin irritation and allergic reactions. It may also cause reaction when applied to skin with eczema. (1,2) More importantly, parabens can pass through the skin and reach the bloodstream. (3,4) Parabens are the substances that mimic the estrogen hormone. The chemical substances that increase hormonal effects, such as paraben, cause the spread of breast cancer, especially triggered by the estrogen hormone. It has been observed that parabens and products formed after parabens are decomposed in the body may have consequences such as reducing the amount and quality of sperm and binding to the uterine tissue in animal models. (5) Paraben has plenty of derivatives. While purchasing a product, it is best to avoid that product if it contains methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben, ethylparaben isopropylparaben, and benzylparaben.

Liquid paraffin (petrolatum, paraffinum liquidum): It is petroleum-derivated. It is used for the skin to look soft and bright. It blocks the pores on the sensitive skin of babies and therefore prevents the excreation of toxins from the body through the skin. It has toxic, allergenic and carcinogenic effects.

SLS / SLES: It is essentially a surface-active foaming agent. It easily passes through the bloodstream to heart, liver, lungs, brain and eyes and may cause permanent damage by remaining in these tissues for a long time. Although its carcinogenic effect is widely known, the laboratory tests show that the products containing SLS/SLES, especially in infants and children, may cause hormonal disorder, deterioration of eyesight, hair loss and rashes on skin surface. SLS may also cause damage to the immune system and lead to problems such as detachment of skin layers and skin inflammation. (6)

Formaldehyde: It is carcinogenic. It is definitely improper to use in infant products, but as it is a very cheap preservative, it is frequently used in unauthorized productions. It is poisonous by inhalation, ingestion and if it contacts with skin.

Propylene Glycol (PG): It is a petroleum-derived substance. It causes a significant number of reactions on skin and even its usage in low concentrations is primarily irritating to the skin. (7) It may also cause eye irritation, gastrointestinal disorders, nausea, headache and vomiting, and central nervous system depression. (8)
